Uh-oh! Your garage door won’t close. Sometimes the fix can be as simple as
replacing the battery in the opener, but other times it may be a sign of a
bigger issue. Although certain garage door repairs should be completed by professionals, there are a few steps you can take, if you’d like, to troubleshoot your garage door before contacting the experts.
Here are a few things to check if your garage door won’t close:
- Check safety sensors: Clutter or obstructions that block the sensors are the first
problem to look for if your garage door won’t close. If there’s nothing
physically blocking the door and sensors, check the sensors to ensure they’re
clean and aligned correctly. Dirt can cover the lens of the sensor and prevent it from functioning
properly. - Ensure tracks are aligned: If your garage door tracks are not aligned, this could cause
your garage door to not close or function properly. The rollers should be able
to move smoothly up and down the tracks. If your tracks are aligned properly,
try cleaning the rollers and then lubricating them with motor oil. This will
remove buildup that may be preventing the door from operating properly. - Set the limits: The limit and force adjusters tell the garage door opener how far the
door should travel before it’s fully closed and help prevent the door from
crushing objects in its path. When these settings are too high, the door senses
the floor as an obstruction and immediately opens again after closing. Your
limit adjusters are located on the side of your garage door motor unit; however,
for specific instructions consult your manufacturer manual or website.
